Over the past few decades, Intel remained the undisputed king of chips and at one point it rode a wave of pandemic-fueled peak at $77.87 billion in annual revenue in 2020. But fast forward to a few years, the company’s trajectory seems to be amiss.

Worse still, profitability has taken a hit, with Intel posting a full-year loss per share of $(0.06) for 2025. Even operationally, the cracks are very hard to miss: it went from a sprawling workforce of nearly 99,500 core employees in 2024 to around 75,000 being cut off as the company scrambles to streamline operations.

On a quarterly basis, the picture doesn’t look any dandier by late 2025, revenue crossed over to line of $13.674 million, barely making any dent from the previous quarter and still below the $15.406 million peak seen in 2023. Intel’s movement feels incremental at best, and points instead to a business stuck in place rather than rebuilding momentum.

From chip king to playing catch-up

Once at the helm of controlling over 80% of the PC processor market, Intel’s struggles now aren’t just financial; a big part of the problem is that they’ve missed out on the next big wave. While rivals doubled down on AI chips, Intel struggled to keep pace, leaving room for competitors to chip away at its dominance.

Meanwhile, its ambitious recovery plan in 2021 included a $20 billion investment in new chip factories, but that bold didn’t quite pay off. And despite external lifelines including roughly $20 billion in financial injections from investors and government support, Intel still ended 2025 in the red.

The result is a household company lost in transition; it’s still massive and relevant in name but no longer setting the pace. As of 2026 Intel is forecasting Q1 revenue to land between $11.7 billion and $12.7 billion, signaling that perhaps the road to recovery is still uncertain. Erstwhile known as the company that defined Silicon Valley’s rise, Intel is having a hard time avoiding becoming a cautionary tale of how even the biggest tech giants can fall behind without warning.
